Bunion Q&A

What is a bunion?

A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a foot deformity that affects the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the big toe. The MTP joint connects the long bone in your foot (metatarsal) to the first bone in your big toe (phalanx).

A bunion occurs when the bones that form the MTP joint become misaligned. The metatarsal bone shifts inward, while the big toe moves toward the second toe.

This misalignment affects the joint capsule (the sac surrounding the joint), leading to inflammation, pain, and a visible bony bump on the inner side of the foot.

What causes a bunion?

Genetics plays a significant role in the development of bunions. Some people are born with a foot structure that makes them more prone to bunions.

Wearing high heels or shoes with a narrow toe box can force the toes into an unnatural position, aggravating the condition. While footwear doesn't directly cause bunions, it can make the deformity worse.

What happens during a bunion evaluation?

When you visit Pinnacle Foot & Ankle Clinics for a bunion evaluation, the team will perform a physical exam, review your medical and family history, and assess the structure and function of your foot.

They may also take X-rays—performed on-site—to support an accurate diagnosis and guide treatment planning.

How is a bunion treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of the bunion. The team typically starts with conservative options to reduce pain and slow the progression of the deformity.

Non-surgical treatment options at Pinnacle Foot & Ankle Clinics may include:

  • Shoe changes
  • Foot padding
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Custom-fitted orthotics (personalized shoe inserts)
  • Corticosteroid injections

If conservative care does not provide relief, surgery may be recommended.
